And the referees are back!
Three days after the NFL’s replacement referees made a questionable call in the end game of the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers in which the Seahawks won 14-12, the regular referees are now back in the game.
The lockout with the league’s regular referees caused the NFL to use replacement referees for the first 3 weeks of the season, a move that many fans deemed unpopular. As the some of the calls of the replacements created a sense of chaos on the field, Monday night’s game ultimately made everyone fed up.
The regular referees were cheered by the throngs of fans as they made their way into the field for the first game of Week 4 between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns, in which the Ravens won 23-16.
All the players as well as team officials agree that with the return of the regular referees, harmony has been restored to the NFL.
Seattle to start Flynn at QB for opener
Seattle Seahawks‘ coach Pete Carroll has announced that quarterback Matt Flynn will be the starting quarterback for this week as well as on the preseason opener on Saturday night against the Tennessee Titans.
But beyond that, the coach wants it to remain a mystery.
The decision to announce quarterbacks was made by Carroll and the Seahawks in light of the three-way competition for the starting quarterback position. For this week, Flynn will start with the first-team offense and play the first half while rookie Russell Wilson will play the second half against the Titans. Tarvaris Jackson will be sidelined as a spectator.
Although Jackson played 14 games for the Seahawks in the previous season despite a painful pectoral injury and helped the team recover from a 2-6 start, he never finished the way the team wanted. For four times he faltered during the fourth quarter which was one of the reasons that Seattle didn’t make it to the postseason.
Mike Williams released by Seattle
Wide receiver Mike Williams was suddenly cut by the Seattle Seahawks just two weeks prior to the start of training camp.
The one-time candidate for Comeback Player of the Year in 2010 whose career was reignited when he teamed up and connected with Matt Hasselbeck and caught 65 passes for 751 yards and 2 touchdowns wasn’t able to find that connection with new quarterback Tarvaris Jackson in 2011. He only caught 18 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown in 2011.
Rookie Doug Baldwin and Sidney Rice, who was acquired prior to the 2011 season, were the favored targets by Jackson.
With the release of Williams, the Seattle Seahawks’ receiver situation is in a flux heading into training camp as Rice is just recuperating from surgeries on both shoulders undertaken while in the offseason.
Baldwin is the first undrafted rookie since the merger to lead the team in receiving 51 passes for 788 yards.
