Philadelphia Eagles Highlights
Holmgren leaving Browns
It looks like coach Mike Holmgren won’t be finishing the job that he set out to do with the Cleveland Browns.
Jimmy Haslam III, the new owner of the Browns, has announced on Tuesday that Holmgren will be replaced as team president but the Super Bowl-winning coach will stay on with the organization to help in the transition.
Haslam purchased the Browns for $1 billion from Randy Lerner and was unanimously approved by all 32 NFL owners. Immediately after the announcement, Haslam appointed former Philadelphia Eagles President Joe Banner as chief executive officer effective October 25 when the sale is concluded.
Apart from those already announced, there are no other personnel movements expected prior to 2013 so general manager Tom Heckert as well as coach Pat Shurmur and his staff are safe for the meantime.
Holmgren was brought in after leading the Green Bay Packers to the 1996 NFL championship as well as being the general manager on the Seattle Seahawks team that captured the AFC title in 2005.
Eagles: From “Dream Team” to Dynasty
After what happened to the “Dream Team” of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2011 season, quarterback Michael Vick has not a hint of hindrance in his voice as he describes the team with an even bigger “D” word for the 2012 season.
In an interview on Tuesday, Vick said that he believed the current lineup of the Eagles can become a dynasty.
Former quarterback Vince Young, who is no longer with Philadelphia, dubbed the 2011 team as the “Dream Team” after a spending spree in the offseason that had the team acquire star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive end Jason Babin, and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins.
This time around, the Eagles concentrated on keeping good players already in the lineup like wide receiver DeSean Jackson, running back LeSean McCoy, and defensive end Trent Cole.
Finishing the last season with a dismal 8-8 record, the Eagles are now looking forward to making the playoffs this season and focusing one game at a time.
Vince Young to play for Buffalo
Vince Young has agreed to play for the Buffalo Bills for one year with the contract worth reportedly $2 million, according to league sources.
The veteran quarterback has had a tough year playing for the Philadelphia Eagles last season wherein he struggled in six games, throwing 866 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He had a career low passing rating as well.
Drafted third overall by the Tennessee Titans in 2006, he was the offensive rookie of the year but played inconsistently until the Titans waived him.
The Bills are positive about the competition that Young will be bringing for the backup quarterback position and are sure that his addition will improve the team overall.
With the addition of Young, the Bills now have a wider choice for backup quarterback position to Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Asante Samuel move to Atlanta Falcons almost closed
Sources in the NFL say that the Atlanta Falcons are about to acquire Pro-Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel from the Philadelphia Eagles. This is likely in exchange for a late-round pick.
The deal would probably be completed Thursday prior to the NFL Draft.
Samuel is a four-time Pro Bowl pick. If traded, he will give Atlanta’s new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan a strong cornerback trio together with Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes.
The General Manager of the Falcons, Thomas Dimitroff, was in-charge of the New England Patriots’ scouting and was responsible for selecting Samuel to the Patriots in 2003.
Almost all Falcons who have face Samuel on the field agree that he is one tough opponent to play against. And that having him on anyone’s team would surely improve the team’s defense.
In nine seasons, Asante Samuel has accumulated 45 career interceptions with his last seasons’s three interceptions in 14 games the lowest since 2005.
Founded as an expansion team of the National Football League in 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles is one of the top division contenders, earning division championships in the former NFL East and currently in the National Football Conference East Division.
