Salary cap appeals dismissed
The appeals of the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins on the NFL’s salary cap reductions for this season and the next were dismissed by an arbitration court on Tuesday.
Stephen Burbank ruled in favor of the NFL dismissing the grievances filed by the Cowboys and the Redskins who had lost money during the uncapped 2010 season. Washington lost $36 million over two years while Dallas lost $10 million for overloading contracts.
Both teams issued a joint statement stating that they will “abide by the arbitrator’s decision to dismiss” the case.
The salary cap dynamics was compared to that of using a credit card by the owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones.
General Manager of the Redskins Bruce Allen has said that the team is “obviously disappointed” and that they still have to talk about the effects of losing another $18 million this year.
Back to basics for Cowboys defense
After watching his defense finish the 2011 season at 14th overall and 23rd against the pass, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will be going back to the basics and teach his team at a slower pace.
Looking back at the season, Ryan sees that some of the players might have gone through a crash course and he wants to re-teach their defensive scheme so that everyone will clearly understand all the basics.
Communication on the field is also an issue for the Cowboys, and Ryan wants to get rid of finger pointing whenever mistakes are made.
With the departure of veterans Terence Newman,Keith Brooking, Bradie James, and Abram Elam, Ryan wants to work with CB Brandon Carr along with five other draft picks, more prominently LSU cornerback Morris Clairborne.
Clairborne will have the pins removed from his wrist next week and began rehab, he is expected to make it to training camp and get used to the playbook of the Cowboys.
